What do I do when nature is gone?

The works "What Do I Do When Nature is Gone?" explores

environmental loss and plastic pollution’s effect on Indigenous culture. It

features traditional mediums and practices of my Nunatukavut and Newfoundland

heritage that document environmental devastation. The transition from natural

materials to plastic is symbolic of the environmental impact seen today.

This work is explored through textiles and performance to demonstrate my culture’s traditions. The use of plastic both subtly and apparent is meant to teach

viewers how big the issue of environmental plastic pollution is and how many

people are unaware.

The increased replacement of natural materials with plastic presents viewers the issue Indigenous cultures face as their land is being polluted. It is showing

the path the environment is on, as nature is being replaced with waste, soon to

be gone forever.

The works are meant to address my thoughts: what am I supposed to do when there is no more nature? How can I continue to learn my culture’s traditions if there is no nature to learn from?
